Canistaria is a virtual realm of our own creation, still in the early pawcess of forming. When it is ready, you will be able to join your friends in the persistent multiplayer world!
This page showcases our work over the past six months -- our initial models and designs of the furst playable environment.
Our medium of choice is Unreal Engine, which provides a wide array of features and optimizations crucial for our mission.
While our target audience is therians, any adult players will be welcome to join.

FEATURES TRACKER
Though we have great ambitions for numerous features, we are well aware of the dangers of feature creep.
Our primary focus is on pawviding a stable & optimized foundation that will serve as a fun social experience for players!
Currently, many assets are placeholders, most notably all the (non-statue) animals which were produced by Malbers Animations or other artists on the Fab Store.
When starting this pawject over six months ago, I was very skeptical as to if it might be really doable... But thanks to the magic of Unreal (and the abundance of available plugins), most of the major technical hurdles are already solved, and implementing new features is relatively straightforward!

My present goal is to complete all the necessary core features and host a fulltime dedicated server that can serve as a fun hangout space for you and your animalfriends.
Along with sporadic feature updates, several different weekly events are planned to help facilitate interaction among a limited base of players. Canistaria will always be free to play, and I will be able to keep the server up for as long as there is significant player interest; if it reaches the point of >20 concurrent players, then asking for donations may be necessary to scale up the server size. This is a game for you weirdo kinky creatures, not the mainstream masses -- the hope is to have a small but dedicated & passionate community of creatures who enjoy socializing within our virtualworld!
Having more exposure always helps, especially in these early stages when getting playtester feedback will be crucial -- it is much appreciated if you share this page around with friends who might be interested!
I try my best to fulfill this dream with only one set of chronically strained meatpaws... This ART is what I live for.
I have no corporate backing, no team to split the effort, no Kickstarter demanding finances in exchange for playable content.
But I do have years of free time, piles of game design textbooks & online courses, the Unreal assets store, and, most impawtantly, much love for canids!!

✶𓃥 Open-world preview (WIP) 𓃦✶
The world of CANISTARIA is vast, and measures about 16 kilometres from one end to the other. You can seamlessly travel from one end to the other, with no loading screens!
Filling such a vast world will, of course, take many years. This, thankfully, is doable thanks to the extensive procedural content generating features within Unreal. Modular environment assets, repeatable points of interest, and dynamically spawning NPCs (such as wandering prey herds and predators) near players will hopefully keep the world feeling alive and populated.
Our initial foxus will solely be on the furst playable subzone -- Sparklegrove -- before extending it to the surrounding Bawi-Tazu. After this, the playable area will be gradually expanded to encompass new zones. Player animals will be free to wander the open-world as they choose, or can take one of the many long-distance transportation options, among which are the planned Xilsboats and Foxtrains.
The initial map sketch upon which we based our in-world design! Many of these are still undergoing major changes, but the general idea of the zones is the same. The temperate starting zone is Bawi-Tazu, a land of lush green meadows, massive forests, and magical glades. Further outward, the different zones will offer increasingly difficult challenges in the forms of environmental hazards and predators, culminating in Xiki-Tazu, which is a blood-strewn alien horrorscape of unending violence. And you can imagine what goes on in Lahi-tazu...

The mother-goddess of Bawi is rumored to slumber deep within the heart of Sparklegrove, a place accessible only to creatures pure of heart.
Many sacred statues and temples are created in her image: most notably within the Critter Cafe, a place of celebration and nourishment for animals of all kinds! Blessed with Xilsara's nurturing energies, the healing pools there can cure any ailment.

✶𓃥 Early 2026 - Prototype Gameplay 𓃦✶
We spent most of our time so far on the environments & world foundation, but have prototyped some basic features for testing! Currently, all animations & characters are placeholder.
Thanks to the wonderful work of many Unreal artists, we have a lot of good canid animations to use as a base for our later model -- examples can be found in these videos: Video 1Video 2.

A cave-exploring fox summons a magical light orb to see the way forward... but it seems to have attracted some friends...
The furst test run of one of the Xilsboats, large magical creatures that will ferry you around the rivers of Sparklegrove and beyond! When finished, these boats will be fully furnished with two accessible levels and cozy dens inside, suitable for relaxing or hanging out during long journeys.

All of these windows will be invisible most of the time; I have an extremely minimalist approach to UI design, preferring zero UI when wandering in the open-world. Windows will only pop up when necessary, such as when spending Chroma to cast spells, sprinting to expend stamina, or targeting a friend to perform emotes.

The curious foxy adventures deep into the caves beneath Sparklegrove, enchanted by the peaceful depths. Soon, they come across a strangely captivating rune...
Drawn to its rainbow glows, they can't help but sit for a while, staring peacefully at the rock... they feel a strange sense of longing and home there, only growing with time...
The rune flares up in light, but the fox is not alarmed. The radiance is wholly embraced! As they stare into the wall, it gives them a peculiar sense of familiarity..
Did something happen..? They can't be sure, but it feels so nice, the surface of the rock so comforting. The fox sits for a very, very long time after that, content to flicker in their light-cave... sometimes they even catch the scent of flowers, and wander off into a not-place, far away and yet never leaving...
✶𓃥 Plant Transformations 𓃦✶
A concept scene for a plant TF feature. You can sit in one of these plant pots to turn into a dogtree, and will remain there if AFK/offline. Other players can walk up and pee/poop on you to gift you nutrients, and you can reward them by dropping edible fruits! We plan for several types of plant transformations (like into any of the flowers you see in the gardens, or something weird like grass or moss), which will also integrate with the gardening features.

✶𓃥 Original Sparklegrove 𓃦✶
✶𓃥 MINECRAFT Sparklegrove 𓃦✶
This section features screenshots from the Minecraft version of Sparklegrove, which was created in 2023-2024! This was our largest server which ended up having a couple dozen creatures joining over a long time period, with a few regulars.
You can see in the Minecraft builds the foundations for what would become the later version in Canistaria! There are also some fun features, like the Critter Cafe and Foxtrain which inspired the current versions. One of my favorite aspects of Sparklegrove was when friends would create their own custom creatures -- I hope to include a similar feature for Canistaria, where players can potentially submit their own skins or playable models.
I have always enjoyed hosting many types of servers for friends to join, and Canistaria is the latest manifestation of this. Many creatures enjoyed their time in Sparklegrove, though the experience was hampered by many technical issues: an extremely tedious setup process involving a modded client, long loading time, difficulty of changing models (or creating an original custom model in Blockbench), limited emotes available, and horrendously bad performance (some players had to go down to merely a few chunks view distance -- not great for immersion).
I learned a lot from the experience, however, and hope to improve upon all these things with Canistaria!! (You might be surprised to find out that a highly detailed Unreal game runs better than Minecraft, but this is indeed the case. Java isn't so hot for games...)

I am a big fan of classic-style, 'world-first' MMO design which prioritizes immersion over streamlined content & game completion.
Examples of such features are classes/species that play radically differently, long travel & rest times, and taking care of the physical needs of your character.
I like to analyze games which found success as online social spaces; persistent worlds where the main appeal is simply living there, exploring, and sharing various fun activities with friends. This is the primary 'goal' in Canistaria -- whatever the player wants.
I also enjoy many 'therian-coded' games which manage to convey the visceral emotional truths of animal existence; this is something I hope to achieve through my work.
